Saruman is a powerful wizard, initially presented as the head of the White Council in J.R.R. Tolkien's works. He does not appear in *The Hobbit* directly, though his name is mentioned.

Saruman is initially portrayed as wise and benevolent, an ally to Gandalf and a leader against the threat of Sauron. His knowledge of lore and mastery of craft are highly regarded.
